about
Sólheimajökull, meaning "the glacier where the sun lives". In fact, when Reykjavík was bathing in snow, we found the sun on the glacier and spent the whole day there, from sunrise to sunset, i.e. 4 hours. In addition, the weather was almost windless, in short - perfect recording conditions. Now I know that what has so far appeared in the "if" category is now a certainty - I will create a sound cartography of the glacier. This and others. Because they deserve it, because they are alive, change, and - what is saddest - they disappear. Their audio documentation seems to be more important than anything.
I want to tell you more about the glacier itself, but I will use the presentation of further sounds. Today I would like to tell you such a story. When I was talking to Andri Magnason, an Icelandic writer, about the sound of Iceland, I asked him: if I had to go with the microphone and record the sound in a place that would be your place, where would you send me? He replied: to the glacier. So, Andri, this sound is for you.
In addition, I would like to thank my team: Magdalena Łukasiak, who made a fantastic photographic documentation of the project, and Agata Jabłońska, who was our guide on the glacier. Agata is the best guide in Iceland, and perhaps even in the world, and if you want to see the glacier up close, you must go with her.
p.s. Andri has written a beautiful book about glaciers, "On Time and Water", which recently appeared in Poland. Be sure to read it.
The sound was recorded at the glacier's face. The lake was just defrosting, and the crushed pieces of ice bumping against each other made a sound like wind chimes.
