about

I found this poem in the Ísmús catalogue, a fragment of it is read by Sumarlína Dagbjört Jónsdóttir. It was written around 1835 by Guðný Jónsdóttir frá Klömbrum. I chose it because the first words Sumarlína reads are: "It's good to go to rest." I thought it would be a poem about peace, rest, sleep. Instead, it turned out to be a poem about dying. Its title "Sit ég og syrgi" can be translated as "I sit and grieve" and is an expression of great sadness after the loss of a loved one. And the content of the fragment quoted in my work goes like this:

It's good to go to rest
And cry to sleep
Better wake up to tenderness
smile to tenderness,
This song is a blessing
for which I was waiting
I stayed with you in my heart
hidden from me
